The most basic act in collage – the cut – is also its most radical. Unmooring paper ephemera from its everyday use puts context and meanings in play without directly representing the source material. The origins of the piece become absent yet omnipresent. The exhibition Shaped by Subtraction seeks out the relationship that a work maintains with the elements and ideas obscured and embedded over the course of its making. A large site specific collage will be a central feature of the exhibition, but in applying this understanding of collage to other mediums, the show will also include incised paintings, spidery yarn installations, and cast concrete sculpture. Participating artists include Dylan Conner, Ronald L. Jones, Jessica Ninci, and Xochi Solis.

Kelly Montana is the Curatorial Assistant for the Menil Drawing Institute. Prior experience includes positions at the Dallas Museum of Art, Lawndale Art Center, and the Fabric Workshop & Museum, Philadelphia. In 2014, she co-curated the exhibition “Model Cities: Houston” at the African-American Library at the Gregory School and in 2017 authored an essay for an exhibition on Houston Modernism held at the Julia Ideson Library. She holds her MA in Art History from the University College London, and BA in Art History and Government from Smith College.
