Artist Bio:
Born in Mexico but raised in Pearland, Texas. Jean is a multi-disciplinary artist with a BFA from the University of Houston. Jean’s work touches upon contemporary events and history with their special interest in society’s relationship with rising authoritarianism and how it copes with the absurdism that follows. They wish to express a subtle rage towards the historical amnesia that riddles our late-stage capitalist world. Using a variety of mediums from painting to papier-mache, Jean can blend and create fictitious narratives that show their deep appreciation for art history, the supernatural, and the esoteric.
Artist Statement:
I aim to create a visual narrative that activates the viewer into a mental or physical inertia. I want there to be a desire to explore the scene crafted from my conscious and subconscious knowledge of the histories and stories of art, politics, and the occult. I believe that we live in an overstimulating and overwhelming age. The conquest and chaos created for economic gain can create these fractals within people’s perception of their reality and warp it to the absurd. This absurdity mixed in with general esoterica is where I find inspiration for the work.
