“A Thinning of the Veneer” is a collection of paintings and wood workings examining the unknowable other. In Solipsism, the philosophical theory that one’s thoughts, experiences, and emotions are only knowable to one’s self, our identities can only be known to ourselves. The thoughts, experiences, and emotions of a given person are necessarily private to that person. It follows then, that each individual can never truly know another.
Through the use of a multiplicity of singular figures and their bodies and the utilization of uniquely dimensional painting substrates, “A Thinning of the Veneer” asks the viewer to examine the simultaneous, tangled bodies and curiously irregular painting structures. This investigation mirrors the necessity to question our identities and how we present ourselves to our community and the deceptive and ambiguous nature of understanding and labeling others.
