Fruits of Their Labor explores the dynamic contrast between two extraordinary women who shaped me: my Cuban grandmother and my Mexican-American aunt, Aunt Carrie. By examining our distinct yet interconnected lives, this body of work illuminates how their experiences inform my understanding of identity, resilience, and a woman’s place in the world.
My grandmother’s life reflects an era of limited choices for women, marked by cultural and domestic submission. Despite these constraints, she cultivated a life of strength, holding onto her Cuban roots while navigating the challenges of assimilation. In contrast, my Aunt Carrie’s story unfolds in a modern context, balancing a bicultural identity with expanded opportunities yet still facing the complexities of self-definition. Together, their journeys reveal the strength and adaptability of women across generations.
This work intertwines my personal memories with artistic depictions of their lives, creating a dual portrait that mirrors our stories. Through mixed-media artworks—paintings, risograph, video, lettering, and installation—I explore themes of memory, feminism, and identity. Vibrant colors, personal belongings, and symbolic imagery evoke nostalgia and connection.
Fruits of Their Labor centers on the emotional power of their narrative, amplifying their voices while honoring their influence and the enduring strength of women’s stories.
